Biography
Junpei Maeta is a Japanese visual artist who creates two-dimensional works using a variety of techniques, including digital painting, printmaking, oil painting, and drawing.
He distills motifs such as animals (like birds and dogs), natural phenomena (such as flames and light), and organs like the heart into minimal forms, aiming to infuse his images with a universal symbolism that allows viewers to project their own inner emotions and experiences.
His creative drive stems from the accumulation of intangible emotions—subtle discomfort, contradictions, and doubt—that arise from living in contemporary society.
In recent years, encountering the situation in Gaza through social media has added a new emotional dimension to his practice: a sense of prayer or a desire to bring change. This shift gave rise to his ongoing Luminous Body series.
Maeta has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions primarily in Tokyo, where he is currently based, as well as in Tottori, where he spent his childhood, and in Victoria, Canada. He has also participated in art festivals held in Gojo Shinmachi (Nara) and Ome (Tokyo). In addition, he has led multiple printmaking workshops as part of various art events.
